PEGGY
PETTIGREW STEWART
The artist has
long been fascinated and intrigued by glass and the light that
passes through. The phenomenon of light waves creating color
chage. She continues to experiment with the material
properties of translucency and transparency in her special
glass. Her technique is woven into the glass to present her
stories and interpretations. Various cultures (including
Native American) have always fascinated her. With the close
friendship of a member of the Hopi Tribe in Northern Arizona, she
has been inspired to create the contemporary glass series "Earth,
Wind, Sky & Water" and "The Storytellers". Through the
storytelling of the Native culture and lore, she presents her
interpretation through the medium of kiln sculpted glass.
Peggy's work expands beyond her signature "Storyteller" series of
glass to create intricate glass sculptures that meld man u
processes, techniques, and stories.
"Each
piece in the series features the masks and faces of many people, of
many cultures. Each piece tells a story about life, and the
circle of the spirit. I have tried to stay true to the culture and
belief of each person or culture in the pieces of the series."

"Transcendence Of The Storyteller" - The Four
Series:
"Earth, Wind Sky
& Water" Inspired by Hopi Native American story
telling. The various aspects of their culture, people, art &
beliefs are intertwined in the glass. Their "circle of life" story
is incredibly inspiring, and has been interpreted by the artist into
each piece in this series. The faces featured in this series
are members of the Hopi Tribe. Many of these pieces have
hidden attributes that are part of the Native
culture.

2007 National Liberty Museum
glass: These pieces were created for the National Liberty
Museum in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, for the Glass Now Gala
10/6/07.
These faces are from a
life mask of Lance, a member of the Bluebird Tribe and of the Sun
Clan. They are life size, and represent my interpretation of the
Hopi culture and stories. I have tried to create these pieces to be
culturally correct, and with the approval of the Hopi tribe member.
This piece is about the freedom of the spirit. In the Hopi
culture, "color cosmology" is a very important issue. Only certain
colors can be used, and they have to be in a certain direction.
Other colors have to be placed in directional accuracy, and some
colors cannot touch others. To use a Hopi's image is no small task.
As they feel that with their image, part of their spirt goes with
the imagery. These pieces Plasma Fusion fused &
kilnsculpted glass.

For Hollywood - 11/07
These two pieces were
created for the West Valley Art Museum "Hurray For Hollywood"
exhibition and event in Arizona. The faces are those of Robert
Shields (Shields & Yarnell). They are lifesize, and were made
from a life mask made from a casting of his face. Jean Lutz
helped create the mask used for this face.
